Retired Cop Sense of Humor

There’s a story out of Chicago about the executive director of their Metra rail system apparently committing suicide by stepping in front of a train . There’s nothing funny about the loss of life and my sympathies go out to the man’s family.

While reading the story there was one sentence that hit my funny bone, the way it was worded cracked a smile. It reminded me of the line from the movie with Mel Brooks, To Be Or Not To Be, where the German Gestapo commandant explained, “We take them out back and shoot them then we interrogate them”; say that again?

“A train engineer put on the emergency brakes when he saw Phil Pagano on the tracks about 50 miles northwest of Chicago but was unable to stop, McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren said.”

A couple of thoughts sprang to mind; the engineer has extraordinary eye sight to see a man step into his path 50 miles away. Secondly, did it really take 50 miles to stop the train? Maybe that should have read differently; too late, I was already laughing.

If this were a Saturday Night Live skit Rosanna Rosanna Dana would be doing her editorial followed by her patented, “Oh, really…”, having listened to her partner whisper the facts into her ear, “… never mind.”

In other news it was rumored President Obama’s back went out while bowing to a local Sheik in Tehran prior to entering a mosque for evening prayer…

Now that would have been funny and also well deserved.
